Nestled at the heart of Bangkok, Nang Loeng’s century-old market is a heaven of local Thai food and rare traditional desserts, from Saikork Planam (wrapped betel leaves with traditional pork sausage), Kanom Tuay (coconut milk custard), to Khanom Mo Kaeng Thua (Thai custard with beans). Nang Loeng is also home to a legendary Thai actor, Mitr Chaibancha, who appeared in more than a hundred of Thai films during the 50s-70s. Many of his films were screened in our ‘Sala Chaloem Thani,’ the first wooden movie theater in Thailand, located here in Nang Loeng. Moreover, Nang Loeng is also home to a southern Thai dance-theater performance called Lakhon Chatri, as well as the Narasilpa House that is dedicated to making embroidery of costumes and masks used in Khon performances. And at Baan Ten Ram (Ballroom Dance House) is where children of Nang Loeng would find themselves hanging out and socializing among themselves. 

ณ ใจกลางเมืองกรุงเทพฯ เป็นที่ตั้งของตลาดนางเลิ้งที่มีอายุกว่าหนึ่งศตรวรรษ​ ตลาดนางเลิ้ง​เป็นเสมือนสวรรค์ของอาหารไทยและขนมหวานสูตรโบราณต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นไส้กรอกปลาแหนม ขนมถ้วย หรือขนมหม้อแกงถั่ว นางเลิ้งยังเป็นบ้านเกิดของนักแสดงไทยระดับตำนานชื่อดังอย่าง มิตร ชัยบัญชา นักแสดงที่ปรากฏตัวในภาพยนตร์ไทยกว่าร้อยเรื่องในช่วงทศวรรษที่ 50-70 ทั้งนี้ทางชุมชนนางเลิ้งได้นำภาพยนตร์ที่นำแสดงโดยมิตร ชัยบัญชาหลายเรื่องมาฉายที่ “ศาลาเฉลิมธานี” อันเป็นโรงภาพยนตร์ไม้แห่งแรกในประเทศไทยที่นางเลิ้งนี้เอง นอกจากนี้นางเลิ้งยังเป็นแหล่งการแสดงที่เรียกว่าละครชาตรี และเป็นที่ตั้งของบ้านนราศิลป์ สถานที่ทำชุดเครื่องและหัวโขนสำหรับการแสดงโขน นอกจากนี้นางเลิ้งยังมีบ้านเต้นรำ สถานที่ที่เด็กๆ ในชุมชนสามารถไปวิ่งเล่นสังสรรค์กันได้ 

All these hidden gems of Nang Loeng are not relics from the past, but are still very much alive in the community despite its fading presence due to time and approaching gentrification. To bring back the life of six historical communities in Bangkok, including Nang Loeng, UNDP Thailand, in collaboration with Bangkok Tourism Division and HiveSters, joined forces to advocate for sustainable development tourism that could generate income and strengthen the communities. 

สถานที่ลับล้ำค่าในนางเลิ้งเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่ซากจากอดีต แต่ยังคงมีชีวิตอยู่ในชุมชน ขัดขืนการเลือนหายไปตามเวลาและการกลืนกินจากการพัฒนาเมือง ดังนั้นเพื่อชุบชีวิตชุมชนทางประวัติศาสตร์หกแห่งในกรุงเทพฯ รวมถึงนางเลิ้งเองด้วยนั้น UNDP ประเทศไทยร่วมมือกับส่วนการท่องเที่ยวกรุงเทพและ HiveSters เพื่อส่งเสริมการพัฒนาการท่องเที่ยวอย่างยั่งยืนที่สามารถสร้างรายได้และสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้กับชุมชน
